Pond Pebbles and Decorative Stones for Pond Landscaping
Around a pond, stone does two jobs at once: it hides the liner edge that would otherwise give the whole thing away, and it holds the margin soil in place so the bank does not wash into the water.
What pebbles do in this application
River pebbles are the natural fit here because water-worn stone is exactly what a real pond margin contains. A mix of grades — fine stone in the shallows, larger stones at the rim, a few feature rocks breaking the outline — reads far better than a uniform ring of one size.
Larger grades matter at the waterline. Fine stone gets displaced by water movement, by fish, and by anyone stepping in to clean, and ends up in the bottom of the pond where it traps debris.
Everything going into or beside water should be rinsed thoroughly first. Transit dust clouds a pond for days and gives the filter unnecessary work.
Sizes, colours and finishes to consider
- Use 20–40 mm and larger at the waterline; keep finer grades to dry margin areas.
- Run the stone over the liner edge and slightly under the water surface so no liner shows at any water level.
- Break the circle — an evenly stoned rim looks artificial. Vary width and let planting interrupt the edge.
- Rinse all stone in clean water before placing it near or in the pond.
- For stocked ponds, tell us at enquiry stage so we can advise on what we can supply for that use rather than assume.
Quantity depends on the area and the depth you choose — decorative cover is commonly laid around 40–50 mm deep. Send your measurements and we will confirm the quantity.

Pond — questions we are asked
- Which pebbles are best for a pond?
- Natural river pebbles in mixed grades, with larger stone at the waterline. They look like a real watercourse and stay in place better than fine stone.
- Do I need to wash pebbles before putting them in a pond?
- Yes. Rinse in clean water until it runs clear — otherwise transit dust clouds the pond and loads the filter.
- Are pebbles safe for fish ponds?
- Natural river stone is widely used at pond margins, but for a stocked pond confirm suitability with us for the specific stone before ordering. We will not make a blanket claim across the range.
