River Pebbles for Ponds, Water Features and Gardens
River pebbles are water-worn stones with soft, rounded edges and mixed natural tones. They are the most natural-looking pebble you can lay, which makes them the standard choice for pond margins, dry riverbeds, water features and gardens that should look untouched.
Because the shaping is done by water rather than machinery, no two stones are identical and the batch carries a natural range of greys, browns, creams and darker tones. Laid loosely, that variation reads exactly like a streambed — the effect a uniform, single-colour stone cannot achieve.
River pebbles are also comfortable underfoot, which is why they are used for stepping areas, foot-massage paths and pool surrounds where larger, flatter stones can be set into a bed.
Available in several size grades from fine to large feature stones, retail and bulk, dispatched across India from the Kishangarh (Ajmer) stone hub.

Buying guide
- For a dry riverbed effect, combine at least two sizes plus a few large feature stones — uniform sizing looks artificial.
- Use larger grades at pond edges so the stone is not displaced by water movement or by fish.
- Rinse thoroughly before adding to any water body to remove transit dust.
- Set flatter, larger stones into a compacted base if they are to be walked on.
Where river pebbles are used
River Pebbles — questions we are asked
- Are river pebbles safe for ponds?
- Natural river stone is widely used at pond margins and in water features. Rinse it thoroughly before placing it, and for stocked ponds or aquariums confirm suitability with us at enquiry stage for the specific stone being supplied.
- What size river pebble should I use for a dry riverbed?
- Mix 10–20 mm and 20–40 mm as the base, then place a handful of larger 40–80 mm stones as accents. That range is what makes it look like a real watercourse.
- Can river pebbles be walked on barefoot?
- Smooth, medium-to-large river stones are comfortable enough that they are often used for reflexology and pool-surround paths. Very fine grades shift underfoot and are less comfortable.
