Water Feature Pebbles and Fountain Stones

Water features are where pebbles look their best, because wet stone shows its true colour. A black pebble that reads charcoal-grey in a dry garden bed becomes deep, glossy black the moment water runs over it.

What pebbles do in this application

The common formats are a pebble bed hiding a reservoir under a bubbling urn or millstone, a stone-filled trough at the base of a water wall, and a decorative layer inside a fountain bowl. In all three, the stone is both a finish and a functional cover over pumps and plumbing.

Black and dark stone give the strongest visual effect in moving water; river pebbles suit naturalistic features; polished pebbles hold a wet look permanently, even in the dry parts of the feature.

Size selection is about water force. Flowing or falling water moves small stone around and eventually into the pump inlet, so anything in the splash zone should be a larger grade.

Sizes, colours and finishes to consider

  • Use 20–40 mm and larger where water falls or flows; save finer grades for still, decorative areas.
  • Keep stone clear of the pump inlet and check that the reservoir grille is not blocked by the layer above it.
  • Rinse thoroughly before placing — dust in a recirculating system goes straight into the pump.
  • Polished stone stays glossy in the dry parts of the feature; unpolished only looks wet where water actually reaches.
  • Hard water leaves white scale on dark stone over time; plan on lifting and rinsing it periodically.

Quantity depends on the area and the depth you choose — decorative cover is commonly laid around 40–50 mm deep. Send your measurements and we will confirm the quantity.

Maintenance

  • Lift and rinse the stone when scale or algae builds up.
  • Check and clear the pump inlet whenever you top up the reservoir.
  • Replace stone lost through splash-out from the top layer.

Water Features — questions we are asked

Which pebbles are best for a fountain?
Black or dark river pebbles in a 20–40 mm grade are the most popular — the colour deepens in water and the size stays put under flow.
Why do my water feature pebbles look chalky?
That is usually hard-water scale. Lift the stone out and rinse it; in very hard water areas it will need doing more often.
Can polished pebbles be used in water features?
Yes — they are a common choice because they keep a wet, glossy appearance even where water does not constantly reach.
