Aquarium Pebbles and Stones for Fish Tanks
In a tank, the substrate is part of a closed biological system — it affects water chemistry, how waste settles, and whether fish can dig without hurting themselves. That makes aquarium stone the one application where we confirm suitability per enquiry instead of publishing a general safety claim.
What pebbles do in this application
Physically, aquarium pebbles need smooth, rounded surfaces with no sharp edges, and a grade that suits the setup: finer stone around 3–8 mm for planted tanks where roots need to anchor, 10–20 mm where the stone is decorative and waste should not sink out of reach.
Chemically, what matters is whether the stone is inert in water. Some natural stone types alter hardness or pH; others do not. Which one you have in your hand is not something you can tell by looking at it — so ask.
Every batch, whatever the stone, must be rinsed in clean water until the water runs clear before it goes into a tank. No soap, no detergent, no bleach.
Sizes, colours and finishes to consider
- Say it is for an aquarium when you enquire, so we can confirm what we are able to supply for that use.
- Choose smooth rounded pebbles only — angular chips can injure fish and trap debris.
- Match grade to setup: fine for planted tanks, coarser for decorative layers.
- Rinse thoroughly in plain water before use.
- Introduce new substrate gradually in an established tank and watch your water parameters.
Quantity depends on the area and the depth you choose — decorative cover is commonly laid around 40–50 mm deep. Send your measurements and we will confirm the quantity.

Aquarium — questions we are asked
- Are your pebbles aquarium safe?
- Suitability depends on the specific stone, so we confirm it per enquiry rather than claim it across the range. Tell us it is for a tank and we will advise on what we can supply.
- How do I clean pebbles before putting them in a fish tank?
- Rinse in clean running water, agitating by hand, until the water runs clear. Never use soap, detergent or bleach.
- What size aquarium pebbles should I choose?
- Around 3–8 mm for planted substrate where roots need to grip, 10–20 mm for decorative layers. Your fish species and plants decide the balance.
