Polished vs Unpolished Pebbles: Which Should You Buy?

· 4 min read

A simple rule covers most cases: polished indoors and in water, unpolished for everything you walk on or spread over area.

What polishing changes

Tumbling to a gloss finish deepens the stone's apparent colour and makes the surface smooth and wipe-clean. An unpolished pebble of the same stone looks paler and more muted when dry, and only shows its full colour when wet.

Where polished wins

Interiors, planters, vases, reception and hotel decor, water features and any use seen close up. Under artificial light, unpolished stone looks dry and dusty; polished stone looks intentional.

Where unpolished wins

Large outdoor spreads, pathways, driveways, garden beds and rooftop gardens. It hides dust, grips better underfoot, and is generally the more economical way to cover real area.

Outdoors in traffic, the polish gradually dulls anyway as fine grit abrades the surface — so paying for gloss on a walking route rarely pays off.

The rule of thumb

Polished where it is touched, held or submerged. Unpolished where it is walked on or spread by the square metre. Many good schemes use both — polished stone in the planters, unpolished across the beds.

Frequently asked questions

Does polished stone cost more?
Polishing is extra processing, so it generally affects price, but the final quote depends on grade, quantity and delivery location. Ask for a quote against your requirement.
Can I make unpolished pebbles look glossy?
Wetting them shows the same depth temporarily. Coatings are sold for this, but they need reapplication and can look artificial outdoors.
