How to Choose Pebbles for Water Features

· 4 min read

Wet stone shows its real colour. Choose for how it looks in water — and size it so the pump survives.

Colour behaves differently in water

Dry black pebbles look charcoal grey; wet, they are deep glossy black. That transformation is why dark stone dominates fountains and water walls. If part of your feature stays dry, polished stone keeps the wet look there too.

Size for the flow

Falling and flowing water moves small stone around and eventually into the pump inlet. Use 20–40 mm or larger anywhere water lands or runs, and keep fine grades to still, decorative areas.

Protect the pump

Rinse every stone before it goes in — dust in a recirculating system heads straight for the pump. Keep the reservoir grille clear of stone, and check the inlet each time you top up the water.

Living with hard water

In hard water areas, white scale builds on dark stone and dulls it. It is not damage; lift the stone out periodically and rinse it and the colour comes back.

Frequently asked questions

Which colour pebble looks best in a fountain?
Black and dark river tones give the strongest effect, because water deepens the colour dramatically.
Why does my fountain pump keep clogging?
Usually fine stone or unrinsed dust reaching the inlet. Move to a larger grade in the flow zone and keep the grille clear.
