How to Choose Pebbles for Garden Landscaping

Start with colour, and keep it limited
Colour is the decision that changes how a garden feels, so make it first. White brightens shaded beds and gives high contrast against greenery. Black adds depth and suits modern architecture. Grey is neutral and hides dust. Brown and mixed tones vanish into naturalistic planting.
One or two stone colours across a whole garden almost always looks better than four. Most gardens that look busy are not over-planted — they are over-materialled.
Then pick the size for the job
Size is a functional choice, not an aesthetic one. Around 10–20 mm is the general-purpose grade for beds and ground cover. Go up to 20–40 mm where water runs, on slopes, or at pond and pool edges where fine stone would migrate. Drop to 5–10 mm for pot dressing and tight detail work.
Finish: polished or unpolished
Unpolished for outdoor spread — it costs less to cover area, hides dust and grips better underfoot. Polished for pots, interiors and water features, where the gloss is the whole point and the stone is seen close up.
Get the groundwork right
Whatever stone you choose, two details determine whether it still looks good in three years: landscape fabric underneath so soil cannot migrate up into the layer, and a physical edge so the stone cannot migrate out.
Lay it around 40–50 mm deep, keep it slightly clear of plant stems, and order the whole quantity in one lot so the shade is consistent.
