Driveway Pebbles, Gravel and Decorative Driveway Stones
A stone driveway drains, costs less than paving, and is quick to install and repair. It only performs, though, if the base and edges are done properly — most failed gravel driveways are base failures, not stone failures.
What pebbles do in this application
The surface layer is what you see, but the compacted sub-base underneath is what carries vehicle load. Loose decorative stone dumped on soil will rut within a season regardless of how good the stone is.
Angular gravel is the right specification for the trafficked surface because the pieces interlock. Fully rounded pebbles roll under tyres and migrate towards the edges — they are better used as border strips flanking a firmer central surface.
For heavy or constant vehicle traffic, a paved or bound driveway with decorative stone borders will outlast an all-loose-stone surface.
Sizes, colours and finishes to consider
- Use angular gravel around 20–40 mm for the running surface; rounded pebbles for borders only.
- Excavate and compact a proper sub-base before any decorative layer goes down.
- Install strong edge restraint on both sides — stone migrates without it.
- Grey and mixed tones hide tyre marks and dust better than white.
- Keep the decorative layer thin enough to stay stable; deep loose stone bogs down wheels.
Quantity depends on the area and the depth you choose — decorative cover is commonly laid around 40–50 mm deep. Send your measurements and we will confirm the quantity.

Driveways — questions we are asked
- Which stone is best for a driveway?
- Angular gravel in a 20–40 mm grade over a compacted base. It interlocks under load, whereas rounded pebbles roll and migrate.
- Can I use pebbles for a driveway?
- Rounded pebbles work well as driveway borders and decorative margins, but for the running surface angular gravel performs much better.
- Do you supply driveway stone in bulk?
- Yes, bulk and tonnage orders are supplied. Share the driveway dimensions and your location for a quantity estimate and quote.
